About Bala Mandir Kamaraj Trust
Inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Bala Mandir was started in 1949 by the late Sri. K. Kamaraj and Smt. S. Manjubhashini. It is today a premier Social Welfare Organisation, which has over the years sheltered thousands of children in difficult circumstances – orphans, destitute and socio-economically deprived children – and now the activities are expanded to include children with special needs. Bala Mandir Kamaraj Trust is a registered society under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975.

Bala Mandir Schools – Vision
One integrated self-financed school from pre-KG to Standard XII in one location with one name with a Hostel attached. It will provide the best quality holistic education in English medium without charging fees.
Bala Mandir Creche :
Over the years the Bala Mandir Creche which was earlier known as the Day Care Centre that was initially set up in the year 1995, has grown as a model Childcare Centre and offers learning opportunities for staff of other NGOs as well.
Children above the age of one year are inducted into a holistic and fun-filled learning methodology which includes the play-way as well as the Montessori method.
Day Care Centre has the Early Education Programme and takes care of providing all facilities for holistic development. It houses children of the Bala Mandir Home, children of the Bala Mandir Staff and the siblings of the children who study in our Vidyalaya and BM Satyamurthi School.
Special features of the Unit :
- The Crèche has experienced and dedicated coordinators, teachers, and helpers.
- Continued Home Visiting programme for parents of our day scholars and outreach programmes to strengthen home-based caring abilities and knowledge.
- Regular monitoring, evaluation and assessment of the early childhood care and education(ECCD) practices and child-wise development using scientific and international accredited screening tools.
Bala Mandir Vidyalaya Nursery & Primary School :
Bala Mandir Primary school was established in 1951 as Nursery School and got upgraded to full-fledged Tamil Medium Primary school in 1956 as a Government Aided school.
It moved to a new building for which the foundation was laid by Thiru. K. Kamaraj in 1974 and inaugurated in 1978 by Thiru. M. G. Ramachandran.
In the academic year 2015-16, the English medium “Vidyalaya Nursery and Primary School” came into existence and has now become a full-fledged primary school with 2 sections. It is housed in an independent building on Bala Mandir – Gurdwara Lane. Meanwhile, due to a steady drop in admissions, the Tamil medium Government Aided school was closed. Thus, Bala Mandir now operates an English medium self-financed primary school with 300 children from KG to Std V.
Bala Mandir Satyamurthi High School :
To enable Bala Mandir to start a high school, the Government allotted land to Bala Mandir vide Govt. Order No. 2762 of 29th June 1960. The High school was set up in 1961 on this land and named “Satyamurthi High School”. Till recently, Satyamurthi school used to have classes from 6th to 10th in both Tamil medium and English medium. The Tamil medium was Government Aided while the English medium is self-financed from the CSR donations received from Corporates and other donors. Currently there are no children in Tamil medium and all the Government paid teachers have been transferred to other schools. The school has also started English medium Higher Secondary classes in 2022-23 under the self-financed mode.
The High School building was inaugurated in 1978 by H.E Sri. Prabhudas Patwari, Governor of Tamil Nadu. The G. Rajagopalan Memorial Hall was inaugurated by Sri. P. Ramachandran, Union Minister for Energy in the same year. The Higher Secondary Block foundation stone was laid by Sri. R. Venkatraman, President of India in 1988. It has all the necessary facilities of a Computer Lab, Science Lab, Library and Craft room, and school hall used for celebrations, PTA meetings and other activities.
Both the Bala Mandir Schools now have only English medium classes and they serve the children from the nearby slums and lower income families apart from the children from Bala Mandir Homes. Bala Mandir does not charge tuition fees and the teacher’s salaries are supported by CSR donations. Both schools aim to give the best quality holistic education to the children to enable them to reach their full potential. The needy children can also avail of the free hostel facility offered by the Bala Mandir Home.
